When Should You Replace Your Electric Shower?

Electric showers are a fantastic addition to any UK bathroom; reliable, efficient, and independent of your boiler. However, like any home appliance, they won’t last forever. So how do you know when it’s time to replace your electric shower?
Whether you’re experiencing performance issues or just wondering if it’s time for an upgrade, here’s what to look out for.
1. Your Shower Is Over 5 Years Old
On average, a well-maintained electric shower can last over 5 years. If yours is reaching that age (or older), it may be less efficient, more prone to faults, and lacking the modern features of newer models.
Signs of age include:
- Discoloured casing or worn buttons
- Inconsistent water temperature
- Slower heating times
- Reduced water flow
Even if it's still working, older showers may not meet current safety or energy efficiency standards. Upgrading can offer better performance, and peace of mind.
2. You’re Noticing Temperature or Pressure Issues
If your shower struggles to maintain a steady temperature or if the water pressure feels weaker than it used to, it could indicate a problem with the internal components, such as the heating element or pressure system.
While some issues (like a blocked shower head or hose) are quick fixes, persistent problems may suggest it’s time for a replacement, especially if your shower is out of warranty. Note that all our Electric Showers come with a two year guarantee as standard.
3. It’s Leaking from the Unit
A leak from the bottom of the unit often means the Pressure Relief Device (PRD) has activated. This is a safety feature designed to release excess pressure. While the PRD can be replaced easily, frequent leaks or internal water damage could indicate a bigger issue.
If leaks persist despite repairs, a full replacement is likely the safer and more economical choice.
4. It’s Tripping the Fuse Box
An electric shower that trips your fuse or circuit breaker could have an electrical fault, potentially caused by a worn-out heating element, faulty wiring, or water ingress.
Important: This is a safety issue and should always be checked by a qualified electrician. If the problem recurs, replacing the shower may be the most reliable long-term solution.
5. Replacement Parts Are Hard to Find
As shower models age, it can become difficult to source compatible spare parts. If you're finding it hard to get hold of things like PRDs, heating elements, or control knobs for your unit, it may be time to consider installing a newer model. Gainsborough offers a wide range of shower spares, but if your unit is discontinued, a full replacement may be the best route.
6. You Want to Upgrade Your Bathroom
Sometimes, the reason to replace your electric shower isn’t about faults, it’s about style and comfort. Newer electric showers offer:
- Sleeker, modern designs
- Improved temperature control
- More powerful performance (especially with higher kW ratings)
- Greater energy efficiency
If you’re renovating your bathroom, upgrading your shower can make a big difference to both appearance and functionality.
Knowing when to replace your electric shower isn’t always straightforward, but age, reliability, and safety are key indicators. If you're experiencing frequent faults, poor performance, or your model is showing its age, it's probably time for an upgrade.
At Gainsborough Showers, we offer a range of affordable and reliable electric showers to suit all UK homes. Whether you're replacing an older model or simply fancy an upgrade, we're here to help.
